Career experience:

I worked for the following companies as a landscape architect for 10 years before going solo as a sole practitioner:

• Senior Landscape Architect, The Landmark Practice, Bristol. (10/2013-09/2015) I worked on developing Landscape and Visual Impact Assessments for Solar parks as well as designing parks and gardens for private and commercial clients. I helped to run a small team of 5 people.

• Associate Landscape Architect, Robinson Landscape Design, Newcastle Upon Tyne. (06/2007 - 06/2013)
I have worked on small and large scale projects involving urban design, technical reports, presentations, planting design and detailed construction design. I am involved in all aspects of the practice including:

- Leading design teams internally and externally
- Creation of high-quality presentation graphics, both digitally and hand-drawn
- Contract management (of between £5000 - £250,000)
- Client and stakeholder meetings
- Submitting fee proposals (of between £500 - £500,000)
- Environmental impact assessments; both report writing and technical analysis
- Web-site design and management
- Internal policy and file-management restructuring

• Assistant Landscape Architect. White Horse Green - Heeley Development Trust, Sheffield. (11/04/2007-07/2007).
Temporary position designing and building gardens, tendering bids and assisting in fee proposals. Worked alongside post-graduate studies.

• Landscape designer. BMLA Landscape Architects, Los Angeles, California. (24/10/05-07/04/06).
Internship comprising of master planning, conceptual design and detailed construction drawings of parks, sports facilities, courtyards and private gardens. Lead designer for a 26 acre sports park, now fully constructed.
Profile:

My high level of enthusiasm is combined with hard work and determination in everything I do. I worked in Los Angeles during my internship to broaden my experiences. During my postgraduate studies at Sheffield I took a position at a local practice to gain design and practical construction experience. At Newcastle I have earned the opportunity to lead in a number of remarkable projects, whilst managing a leading city-based practice, achieving promotion as Associate Landscape Architect whilst also gaining CMLI status.

I am passionate about the broad scope of Landscape Architecture. I have an excellent attention to detail, coupled with a pragmatic attitude towards design. I can effectively communicate design ideas to clients and manage contracts to realise the designs on the ground. My professional interests lie in both the conceptual design of spaces and the practicalities of detailed design. I work best in close-working relationships with contractors and clients and am never afraid to ask hard questions. I have a love of garden design, planting and ecologically sustainable design, which I try to bring to all of my work.

My interests outside of the office include a passion for rock climbing and mountaineering. I also enjoy travel, garden visits, playing the acoustic guitar, cycling and walking.

Neil Morbey – Landscape Architect
Neil has asked me to provide a reference following his recent move to Bristol – I am happy to do this without reservation.

We have worked very closely with Neil (working as part of Robinson Landscape Design) and have greatly valued his professional approach, enthusiasm and creativity on several of our key projects in Newcastle City Centre over the last 3 years. He has been instrumental in helping us deliver:
- Quayside Seaside
- Grey Street Gardens
- The Sir Bobby Robson Memorial Garden
- The redevelopment of St Nicholas’ Square
- Refurbished planter at Newcastle Central Station

Neil was a very good fit with our organisation, comfortable to combine strong design work with the practical, hands-on aspects of ascertaining delivery costs, handling tenders and the subsequent works contracts, with Planning where necessary.
In short we found Neil really good to work with – we’ll miss him in Newcastle!

2006:BMLA

As Neil's direct supervisor, I had daily contact with him through his employment period at BMLA, Inc. from October 24, 2005 through April 7, 2006.  I can say without reservation that he was an asset to the firm, and he'll be sorely missed as he continues with his educational endeavors.

As I am required to interview many landscape architectural candidates for employment each year, Neil is one of the more prepared individuals I have had the pleasure to engage.  He is organized in his thoughts and efforts, which is not always the case with individuals transitioning between the academic world and the chaos of office life.  Neil, thankfully, did not require the anticipated six month training period that many graduates require.

During his employment, he assisted with the development of design development plans, illustrations and details for a twenty-seven acre community sports park.  He prepared the preliminary estimates under my guidance.  In addition to his efforts in design, he worked on many projects in the area of construction document preparation.

Finally, Neil exhibited an enthusiasm and skill for the use of computer based graphics and communication.  This became very useful for he was able to step-in and provide support to others within the office when team work was the key to meeting deadlines.

In conclusion, I believe that Neil Morbey will become a very successful Landscape Architect, and I look forward to having the opportunity to compete for his services in the future, if he considers coming back to the states to continue his career.

Respectfully submitted,

Baxter Miller, ASLA

2003: University of Sheffield

I have known Neil for four years – the time he has been a student with us on our Landscape Design and Planning course.

Neil is undoubtedly one of the most talented students in his year, and has produced consistently excellent work throughout his time here.  Not only is he able to communicate and convey his ideas with very well executed drawings and plans, he is very articulate in expressing his intentions.  His work shows a high degree of maturity and technical understanding, and he is always very enthusiastic and willing to put a great deal of work into everything he does.

Moreover, Neil is very forthcoming in discussions and is always able to make positive and considered contributions to group work.  I have found him to be very friendly and open – in short he is the sort of student that is a real pleasure to have in the department.
