Robinson Landscape Design (2007 - 2012)

I have been working with Robinson Landscape Design, Newcastle upon Tyne since 2007. During this time I have become an integral part of the team and then a leader of the team. I am curently the Associate Landscape Architect at the practice and earned the professional title CMLI after completing my chartership in 2010.

I project manage and design on a wide array of projects including large scale housing developments; such as Newcastle Great Park, urban design; Sunderland City Centre, Newcastle libraries and Masterplanning; Northumbria Police HQ. Since 2009 I have managed 5 contracts from conception to completion. I am especially proud of the work carried out within Newcastle City Centre.

I am involved of every aspect of the practice including project management, fee proposals, client liason, conceptual design and detail design.

All Images here are produced by me, under employment of RLD.

Images are approximately chronological, starting with earlist produced.

Newcastle Great Park: This image was created alongside a colleague and is used several masterplans to show the overall scheme.

Newcastle Great Park: I developed this plan as a key component of the overall Masterplan for NGP.

Newcastle Great Park: Working with Planning consultants, ecologists, architects and clients I was able to take large amounts of planning conditions and design elements and present the information clearly to allow easy discharge of planning conditions.

Newcastle Great Park: I developed conceptual / presentation diagrams to explain the layers of information in the design of housing in NGP.

Newcastle Great Park: I developed conceptual / presentation diagrams to explain the layers of information in the design of housing and open space in NGP.

Newcastle Great Park: I did all the landscape diagrams and conceptual work for the design and access statement. This shows sections from different streets and the varied planting and detail design elements that made character areas and improved site legibility..

Newcastle Great Park: An excerpt from the D&A statement showing a street intersection next to a green. The greens were designed as ‘lungs’ for the development and enclosed on the main route side, but open on the homezone edge.

Durham University Business School: Detailing bespoke site furniture

Newcastle Great Park, Town Centre: an excerpt form the town centre D&A statement, which I provided full design text, diagrams and conceptual work.

Newcastle Great Park, Town Centre: the images here were created with an artist. I aided and worked alongside to create these illustrations.

Portland: An urban design scheme in which I designed and drew up plans, construction drawings and specs. This shows a Masterplan for block 1a.

Portland: 1c, which used in-situ lighting strips and a semi mature tree to work with reflections off the architecture.

Newton Aycliffe: I drew up presentation diagrams for a commercial warehouse. Designs used screening mounds and an internal wetland landscape. I also assisted with ZVI and photo montages.

An example of a photo-montage site analysis report.

Benedict: An urban design scheme which I took over from a colleague. I was able to update the scheme in light of planning standards and conditions. I worked on the Masterplan, paving design, levels and planting.

Birtley: A large housing scheme in which I worked on all the design elements for the open space and internal layouts. This image shows a CAD Masterplan.

Romano Park: I worked on and presented a bid for a playground based on the themes of ‘Landscape for Play’ and Roman/Ancient Britons (broadly).

Romano Park: A photo board explaining the features and elements.

Northumberland Police HQ: A Masterplan developed alongside the architect was informed by analysis work I did. This plan shows a breakdown of character areas within the site.

Northumberland Police HQ: Analysis of movement and views.

Northumberland Police HQ: Conceptual sketch of a housing area.

Sunniside, Sunderland: A public realm urban design scheme in which streets and spaces are designed alongside artists. I worked on this project since my arrival and it is soon to move into implementation.

A countryside cottage develoment in which I assisted with graphics and a presentation to planning officers

City Library, Newcastle, for which I provided construction drawings and on-site supervision

A 3m x 5m planter for which I designed a planting scheme and managed the contract and build. Completed winter 2009

My design for a temporary pocket park located on a demolished building site. A small budget required a high-impact design.

The planting consisted of simple, low-maintenance grasses planted with under-storey allium bulbs. The canopy is from 6 pleached lime trees. This provides visual interest, but maintains a safe pavement, with open views.

The designer sitting in the park on sunny day. It has become a haven for patrons of the nearby ice cream shop!

Completed Quayside Garden

The completed garden

My design for a memorial garden, near St James' Park, Newcastle. This was a low budget scheme as part of a future sculpture memorial to Bobby Robson.

The completed square has been a resounding sucsess. I worked closely with the contractor, NCC during the build period.

My design for St Nicholas' Cathedral

During summer 2011 I also designed and project managed a temporary 'garden' in the very centre of Newcastle. This required intricate detailing and a close working relationship with the contracter, client and council during the contract management process.

in the summer of 2011 I designed and project managed the Quayside Seaside, a temporary artificial beach on the Quayside. This has been a summer sensation.
