Sketches and Conceptual Drawings

Computers can sometimes lead to sterile or ridged designs. The ability to use freehand sketches to think and develop designs is important. Conceptual diagrams are also a crucial tool in early design stages. I have always found these abilities help me create free flowing, adaptable designs which can be explained and justified.

Sketchbooks

An example, taken from an ecology project shows how I find using sketchbooks to record design development a useful tool.

Models

Models can be help gain a handle on contours and spaces. This model was part of a conceptual design to show how the large open space works and is overlooked.

Concepts

I can achieve quick conceptual diagrams to convey ideas and site circulation. This is taken from a 2004 Urban Design project.

Hand Drawing

Hand drawing of quick or presentation style 3D or 2D (sections/plans)is fun and I enjoy creating colourful, vivid images. This is taken from an Urban Design project, to display various spaces. These drawings are from an Urban Design project in 2004.

Plan Drawing

Creating hand drawn plans can convey a friendly appearance. This was a cultural heritage masterplan for public viewing (2004).

Combining Hand and Computer Graphics

Combining drawing with Photoshop can create good results, as I showed in a mitigation diagram (2006).
