Urban Design Examples

Urban Design fascinates me. At the University of Sheffield I have undertaken several urban orientated projects which have involved considerations of planning, visual impacts, construction detailing, special sequences and circulation. I am inspired to help make our cities beautiful and liveable places and create user friendly networks of pathways, sequences and spaces. I have taken part in an Experiential Landscape Place (ELP) project with Dr. Kevin Thwaites and Ian Simpkins, who have revolutionised a new way at looking at the design of cities at the human scale.

Strategies

Strategic Planning in this project was used to map the surrounding road and pedestrian networks and specify how the project build would be phased. (2004)

Planting Plans

Planting plans in CAD were applied to the fine scale detail in this project (2004)

Sheffield, Castlegate. Masterplan 2004

The 2004 Masterplan was drawn by hand and rendered with pantones. It focuses on a neglected quarter of Sheffield City Centre.

Sheffield Detail Design

The 2004 Detail Design was drawn in CAD and rendered in Photoshop. This portrays some of the finer details in a new urban plaza.

Leeds ELP Urban Design 2006

The 2006 Urban Design project focused on an up and coming urban neighbourhood in Leeds. This masterplan focuses on a new route through the site with a sequence of spaces.

Spatial Sequence

The spaces in this project were explored using Sketchup and then I created a series of eye level perspective drawings to compliment the presentation.

ELP

The ELP process used to survey the site informed me of current problem areas, strengths and opportunities within the site, both aesthetically and experientially. I used Illustrator to present the complex information.

SSUN

This report investigated the definition of a Sustainable Urban Neighbourhood. This was completed in InDesign.
